Negativity is contagious

Somehow I have found that people seem to enjoy my company. They find me positive and uplifting. My aunt recently told me that she loves being around me and that when I leave her she still feels good and motivated.

In our family, we have alot of Negative Nellys. The people who complain about everything and who make you feel worse when they're gone. They sit around telling you what you need to be doing and what you're not doing that's good enough. They complain about everything in their life and everything in your life too.

Judgmental and hypocritical, it can be difficult to stay positive when surrounded by the negativity. The reason being that negativity is contagious. We are programmed to think negatively anyway.

The best way that I found to decrease the negative thoughts in my mind has been through meditation and hypnosis recordings. I know that it sounds silly but when I had nothing else, I turned to God and to self help books.

Learning to be mindful right now and enjoy your life right now at this moment in time is very important to live a balanced life. No matter what is going on in your life right now, there is something that you can be grateful for. There is something that you can be glad of. And if there is nothing else then you can be glad that you woke up.

Life is what we make it. It is not a guarantee that you will be successful at every thing that you try to do. But it is a guarantee that you will not be if you don't even try.

Still working on my masterpiece

Recently I took a test to see what my calling is in life. The results showed me that I am supposed to be an inspiration to others. That's my calling in life.

I took another test to see what my vocation should be. The results showed that I should be a writer, which is what I have always wanted to be anyway.

I thought as a child that I would be a teacher, and as I grew up I thought that I wanted to be a lawyer. Then I thought somewhere around the 7th grade that I wanted to be a writer. In the 8th grade, I had to write a book for the talented and gifted program. The TAG teacher, along with my accelerated English teacher, said that I was a talented writer and they wouldn't be surprised if they found my books in a bookstore one day.

From then on I wrote ferociously. I had always been an avid reader since I was a small child. My grandmother says that before I had to take the test to see if I needed to go to kindergarten, I was already smarter than a second grader. (She also says that I was a beautiful child like Elizabeth Taylor, so I am not sure how much of that is true vs her bias.)

I made so high on the test that I didn't have to go to kindergarten. It wasn't required at that time. By second grade they were testing my IQ to see if I qualified for the talented and gifted program, which I got into without a problem. I remained in the accelerated and gifted programs until I graduated which I was able to do a year early due to having enough credits to graduate.

Even graduating a year early I was selected as one of the salutatorians of our class. I was surprised, thinking that surely the fact that I was graduating from the 11th grade would make me ineligible. I wasn't sure, but I had hoped. I didn't want to speak in front of a bunch of people at graduation.

But I did. And it wasn't that bad. I don't think that anyone even remembers my speech. I certainly don't.

I should have done more with my life because of those things but I did not do all that I wanted to do. I made mistakes along the way. But I survived and I am still working on my masterpiece.

We are surrounded by too much information while we search for wisdom

I am a nerd. I have alwaya been a nerd. I love to learn. I soak up information like a sponge.

In the technology age, we are surrounded by information. When I graduated high school, only 34% of American households had Internet access at their homes. Today, we walk around connected to the Internet nearly 24/7 through a phone more advanced and powerful than the first personal computer.

Our phones can tell us where to go, where we are, what we spend our time doing, when to be at a meeting, how many steps we take each day, and the answer to any questions we may have.

When I first realized that there was so much information in the palm of my hand I became mesmerized by all that information and all of the wonderful things that a smartphone could do. I love to follow technology and learn about new gadgets that are being developed.

Yet, in all of that information, have any of us actually become any wiser? Or do we still get our wisdom from things we experience first hand?

Do you learn more by keeping up with what everyone you know is up to at any given moment?

Or does having a place to interact with people that you know from the comfort of your own home only give you a sense of being social while still being too lazy to actually be around them?

There are things that adults told me years ago that I dismissed and had to learn the hard way. There are younger people that I talk to now and I tell them the exact same things that I was told and they dismiss me, only to come back later and say that I was right. Lol.

Are there some things that you just have to learn for yourself?

Are those things always involving relationships, friendships, sex, and love? Those are usually things that people have questions about but in the end, they still have to learn it through experiencing the feelings and thoughts themselves.

You can tell someone that someone else is not a good guy for them because of these reasons and lay those reasons out for them but what are the chances that they will actually listen to you? Most people might listen, but in the end, they would try to make a failing situation work with someone who is not good for them.

Sometimes maybe it is better to let people learn things on their own. Sometimes it is better to intervene.

The wisdom comes in knowing the difference.

I hope I find her, because I'm tired of searching

I was watching a movie about Nora Ephram earlier and I knew the name but I couldn't place her. Only during the movie did I realize that her voice has been a large part of my reading material and movies I watched growing up.

It is funny how someone can touch you in a way that they will never know, even after their death at times. This lady was an incredible writer. She is the writer that I would like to be. And she did exactly what I have thought, and exactly what I had always been told about the best writing, which is that you should write what you know.

I have always done my best writing when I was writing about something that I know. If it is about my life then I can write about it forever it seems. I can find words for weeks.

She also seemed to be the kind of person that others went to for certain advice and who would be very certain in her opinions. She seemed to come across as a very interesting person. She seems to be an understanding and observant. She seems very honest and she seems very generous which does have a way of drawing people in.

Did I become who I am in part because of anything that I may have read, or a movie that I may have seen, the she wrote? How much OD that influenced who I am and how I see the world?

Did the opinions of strong women from the 70s, 80s, and 90s shape me into the stronger woman that I am?

I watched a documentary on Gloria Steinham not long ago and she made the comment that they didn't want the women who came after them to be grateful for the rights they now have. They wanted them to feel like there was more to be done. They didn't want them to accept a little bit because then they'd accept the way that things would end up going backwards.

And they were exactly right.

Feminism took good hold with people in my generation but the two generations after me have not gotten the message. They had an anti-feminist movement on Twitter where young girls would say things that were so anti women, that it is going to set us back. It will set all women back.

I heard that the boys of today are actually the group that is least likely to want to work for a woman or be comfortable with a woman in a position of power. I didn't quite understand why that would be.

Are the boys today upset that their mothers aren't home from work with them everyday? Are they suffering from the women's movement? Or are they somehow threatened by women becoming their equals in every sense of the word? Or are they having a problem with women because of their deadbeat dad's? Or are they having a problem with women because of their fathers negative views on women? Do their fathers have those negative views on women because of the women in their lives having been influenced by the women's movement of the 70s?

If any of that, or all of it, is true does that mean that the women's movement was a bad thing? Absolutely not.

I remember my mom's mother, my granny, always telling me that I did not need to depend on a man. That I did not need to become dependant on a man. She said to me that if I was waiting for a man to open a door for me, I'd be waiting forever. She said if I wanted a door open, I would have to open it myself.

For a long time, I sort of felt that in a strong way to the point where it was odd to me if a guy insisted upon opening my doors for me. I was more of the type who if I was walking up to a restaurant and I reached the door first, I'd open it and hold it for you. If you got there first, then you could hold it for me.

But I never have been one who cared much about wanting to be the first one who opened the door. Probably because I like to look around when I walk in and I like to more or less have someone else to hide behind.

I know the reasons for that go deep into my psyche. It comes from growing up in a house full of anger. For whatever reason, my childhood years weren't the happiest of my life because my mom spent so many years miserable.

Somehow I saw that I could not, would not, live in misery. I could not be the cause of why anyone was miserable. And for a long time in my life I thought that my being born was the reason she had made decisions that ended up in her being miserable. So there was a lot of guilt there too.

Yet somehow through my grandmother's words I felt like I had something to prove. I needed to be ambitious and I needed to be great. As a small child I wanted to be a teacher. As an older child, I wanted to be a judge.

When did all of that change? When did I decide that I was supposed to be somehow in politics or law? When I visited Washington DC after the 6th grade, I remember having the best time. I saw the things I had only read about. I saw the places of history.

I saw the Smithsonian, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the Mall. It was astounding.

I guess I fell in love with Washington DC and I knew I wanted to go to college at Georgetown. I wanted to accomplish all of these things, and of course, I have not done those things. As you probably well know, life happens while we are making other plans.

At some point, life changed my ambitious nature went more of into a practicality. I went into Business Management, because my aunt had majored in that and I knew if she could do it then I could do it too. It wouldn't be that bad. My choices at that time were limited, or so I thought. In actuality my choices were so vast at that time, but they were unknown to me in a way that only hindsight can show you once that time in your life has passed.

A friend of mine used to tell me that I had the world by the tail. I didn't know what that meant until I no longer had the world by the tail.

Yet through it all, I had an idea of finding an idealized type of love and marriage that I don't think that anyone could ever measure up to that. I wanted to have children and be a mother, but the best mother... With the house everyone wanted to hang out in and that had fresh baked cookies everyday. But did I want to be a housewife with kids because my mom couldn't be? Did I want a mom who was there for me because she wasn't because she was working? I don't know that.

Because I have gone back and forth over wanting to do something important in my life and with helping people and becoming one who makes history and in being the best mother one could be, I have not accomplished either of those things.

At 36, I have no children, no marriage and also no divorce, a college education, but no real career or sense of self. I wonder if I am actually living the life that I want to live but at least I am not making someone else miserable along the way?

An uncle of mine told me not too long ago that I was waiting for the perfect man and that man was not coming. Maybe I am.

But I don't think so. I am waiting on the perfect one for me before I could make a commitment of marriage. I didn't want to end up divorced and in the middle of my life (hopefully the early middle), I have not been divorced. So I can say that I have succeeded at that.

I have had alot of love, more than my fair share of lovers, and many, many bed partners. But I have had no children and I still live on the same property that I grew up living on.

And I have no idea what I am doing with my life. Yet somehow I feel like maybe I am finding myself in all of this mess.

At least I hope I find myself. Because I am pretty damn tired of looking for her.

Writing for the sake of writing

I used to write all the time. I used to blog several times a day in an online diary site long before there were such sites as Facebook and Twitter. I wrote stories for a diary called Opinionations where we discussed politics and current events and provided news to those who were otherwise not going to watch the news.

I readily expressed my feelings online and in writings and handwritten letters to my friends.

And there came a point about 6 or 7 years ago when I didn't have daily constant access to the Internet. And then Facebook came about which lowered the traffic to the diary sites I used and they shut down. I stopped writing as much as I used to write.

Luckily I had downloaded copies of my diaries so I didn't lose them. Recently I reread some of my posts from 14 years ago or more, and I was astounded.

First, I was astounded at the things that I did not know back then. Somehow in my memory I had convinced myself that I was much wiser back then than I really was, as hindsight has shown me.

And second, I was astounded at my ability to write so well. I clearly and openly communicated my points. I wrote about my life with no abandon.

I wondered what happened to my writing skills. I wondered what happened to my drive to write about everday things. I used to be so excited about writing everyday. I used to be excited to get feedback on my writing, thoughts, feelings, ideas, concerns, and opinions. I was engaging and interesting.

"Am I not anymore?", I asked myself.

I soon realized that I am, and I still want to write. It has been my life's ambition to be a writer of great books. To be able to live on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean, sit on the beach and work from a laptop. To have the freedom to work anywhere in the world and not be forced to stay inside chained to a desk forever. I wanted to travel the world and write things that kept people thinking and informing them and helping them while also making me money. Lol.

Facebook used to be a place where people wrote about things in their life and then people started getting annoyed by the long posts and rambling thoughts. They wanted to see memes and pictures that they could share. And now it is taught as a best practice to keep your posts very short and your photos plentiful when you're posting on Facebook or Twitter.

Ebooks are published by people who cannot even write properly. I have read some that used broken English or seemed to be copied from other sources and haphazardly thrown together. If these people can be published, why can I not?

The thing is that I think I can. I have the ability to see things from different perspectives. I am objective, understanding and unbiased. I prefer facts to conjecture. I prefer truth to bullshit. Have those things been lost in the world due to the attention spans of the majority of people who simply don't want to read? I don't think so.

I have found that my ability to write lost its luster of years ago after I stopped writing as much. Like any skill, writing is something that in order to do it well you must do it often. To play the piano well as a kid I had to practice and practice alot.

I haven't been practicing my writing as much as I used to. I have read so many articles and information about marketing and blogging. I have read how you have to do this or that to get your audience. How you have to follow all these rules to make any money at writing. I used to write just for the sake of writing but now people don't seem to care about that anymore.

Only it seems to me that maybe I should not care about those people. I should care about my writing and the elite few who actually do like to read and write. I should care less about the masses of those who just aren't as bright as some people and more about the few who appreciate learning, information and truth.

So now I write for the sake of writing and if nobody reads what I write then that's fine. If everyone reads it that's fine too. But in order to get better at writing I am going to have to just simply write. And let the flow come back to me so that no matter what I do in life I don't lose my ability to effectively communicate with others.

What is your Passion?

I wrote this for an article in Fuzzfurr in 2006.

What is your Passion?

By Jodi Jones

Each one of us has a fire in our heart for something. It’s our goal in life to find it and to keep it lit. – Mary Lou Retton
What do you want your legacy to be?  Although I don’t generally like to think of my impending death, I found the question intriguing and it didn’t take me very long to discover my response: for people to say, “I am a better person for having known her.” To some that might seem like a lofty goal, but I would never be satisfied by having low aspirations. I do not shoot for mediocrity.  I am not a mediocre person; I will not settle for a mediocre life.  Having an extraordinary life is what I want.
Everyone is motivated, inspired, and driven by something.  Some people are driven by power, money, success, evil, hatred, love, religion, marriage, children, God, or family.  At age 85, legendary artist Michelangelo said, “Ancora Imparo” which means “I am still learning.”  How inspiring to know that someone as remarkable as Michelangelo would say that, when others consider him to be a “genius”.  Learning has always been a passion of mine.  Everyday I strive to learn something new and grow as a person.
Opening the minds of others to a new thought, idea, opinion, or viewpoint is one of the best feelings.  It is truly rewarding when someone says, “I never thought of it that way.”  Wherever I end up in life, I aim to make a difference to and for others.   I want to open people’s minds; broaden their horizons; change their perspectives; make them think differently; and inspire them to want to learn.
Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not worth living” which is truer than people think.  Why do we believe what we do? Why do we feel as we do? Why do we want what we do?  We should know why – or at least want to know why.  We should be able to defend all of our opinions, thoughts, and beliefs.  Why are you who you are?
I am puzzled by those who wish to remain the same forever; those who do the same thing over and over expecting different a different result; those who believe the same things as someone else but do not know why. If you look at the world at 40 the same way you did when you were 20, then you have wasted 20 years.  Personal growth and profound knowledge are goals set deep in my soul. Certainly I have other goals, but all other goals come from that deep urge to learn, love, and inspire.  I want it for myself and for others.  I want people to want to think for themselves, not to be led by others.  I want them to know why they feel as they do, why they want what they do, and why they hold the opinions they do.
If I can for a single moment give someone else a thought they never had, and if I am able to open their minds about something – anything at all – then I have absolutely helped them grow and become a better person… simply by having known them.

Extremely Ineffective Daily Affirmations

Extremely Ineffective Daily Affirmations

I have the power to channel my imagination into ever soaring levels of suspicion and paranoia.

I assume full responsibility for my actions, except the ones that are someone else's fault.

I no longer need to punish, deceive, or compromise myself. Unless, of course, I want to stay employed.

In some cultures what I do would be considered normal.

Having control over myself is nearly as good as having control over others.

My intuition nearly makes up for my lack of good judgment.

I can change any thought that hurts into a reality that hurts even more.

I honor my personality flaws, for without them I would have no personality at all.

I am grateful that I am not as judgmental as all those censorious, self-righteous people around me.

I need not suffer in silence while I can still moan, whimper, and complain.

As I learn the innermost secrets of the people around me, they reward me in many ways to keep me quiet.

When someone hurts me, forgiveness is cheaper than a lawsuit.  But not nearly as gratifying.

The first step is to say nice things about myself. The second, to do nice things for myself. The third, to find someone to buy me nice things.

As I learn to trust the universe, I no longer need to carry a gun.

All of me is beautiful and valuable, even the ugly, stupid, and disgusting parts.

I am at one with my duality.

Blessed are the flexible, for they can tie themselves into knots.

I will strive to live each day as if it were my 50th birthday.

Only a lack of imagination saves me from immobilizing myself with imaginary fears.

Does my quiet self-pity get to you or should I move up to incessant nagging?

Today I will gladly share my experience and advice, for there are no sweeter words than "I told you so."

False hope is nicer than no hope at all.

A good scapegoat is nearly as welcome as a solution to the problem.

Just for today, I will not sit in my living room all day watching TV. Instead I will move my TV into the bedroom.

Who can I blame for my own problems? Give me just a minute...  I'll find someone.

Why should I waste my time reliving the past when I can spend it worrying about the future?

The complete lack of evidence is the surest sign that the conspiracy is working.

I am learning that criticism is not nearly as effective as sabotage.

Becoming aware of my character defects leads me to the next step, blaming my parents.

I will find humor in my everyday life by looking for people I can laugh at.

The next time the universe knocks on my door,  I will pretend I am  not home.

My body is a temple. Do you want to come over for midnight mass?
To have a successful relationship I must learn to make it look like I'm giving as much as I'm getting.

No way will I accept YES for an answer!

I am willing to make the mistakes if someone else is willing to learn from them.
